The Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Saturday, February 15, in the Family Life Center of Fincastle United Methodist Church. Family members and guests joined the DAR members to celebrate George Washington’s Birthday.
Two new members were inducted into the chapter, Susan Elizabeth Hays and Mildred Hooker Scott.
A memorial service was held for one DAR member who passed away during the past year. Mary Ann Rader Obenshain had been a member of DAR since December 5, 1981.
Carole Geiger, National Defense chair for the chapter, shared information on the men who served as President and their roles in the military service to the nation. President Jimmy Carter was the only member to have graduated from a service academy, and he was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

In honor of our former Presidents, members played a First Ladies Trivia Game led by Cathy Cronise. An inspiring program was provided by Marsha Campbell, who portrayed First Lady Abigail Adams, wife of second President John Adams and mother of sixth President John Quincy Adams. Dressed in a beautiful blue dress that could have been worn by Mrs. Adams, she shared her experience as a Colonial woman at the perilous time surrounding and during the American Revolution.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. Today’s DAR is dynamic and diverse, with over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters in the United States and abroad. DAR members annually provide millions of hours of volunteer service to their local communities across the country and world. DAR chapters participate in projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.
