BROGAN, Henry N.
Henry “Hank” Norman Brogan, 82, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at his home after fighting a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was a member of Grace Bible Church. He was born June 7, 1934 in Botetourt, the son of the late Homer and Grace Brogan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hollywood Brogan, and beloved grandson, Brian Conner.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy P. Brogan; children, Henry “Norman” Brogan Jr. (Trish), Gary Brogan (Kim), Deanna Conner (James) and Dennis Brogan (Rachel); brothers, Charles Brogan, Kenneth Brogan (Barbara) and Roger Brogan (Connie); sister, Peggy Wooten (Jim); eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two granddaughters-in-law, one grandson-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the medical staff at Carilion for all the care and support.
A celebration of Henry’s life was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at Rader Funeral Home, Daleville with Pastor Jay Robinette officiating. Burial was in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. CAMPER, Robert B.
Robert Bruce Camper, 86, Buchanan, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 8, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Bessie B. Camper; brothers, W. Fred Camper, Frank M. Camper, Ray E. Camper, and Billy Camper; sister, Margaret Camper Obenshain; and infant granddaughter, Jessica Noel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley Finch Camper, sister, Nancy Camper Reed; children, Roderick Camper and wife Christine, Debra Noel and husband Melvin, Vonda Camper, Sandra Camper, and Brian Camper. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Melissa Noel Flint (and James), Chelsea Camper Ashe (and John), Rebecca Noel Kovacevic (and Arnes), Jeffrey Camper, Bradley Noel, Jamey Camper, and Zachary Noel; four great-grandchildren, Camdyn and Bailee Flint, and Ayden and Layla Kovacevic, along with numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Robert served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1954 and retired from the United States Postal Service after 29 years of service at the Buchanan Post Office. He also served for many years as the Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a member for 58 years. Robert enjoyed working in the garden and doing carpentry projects around the house. He was a loving father and good family man who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Bennett officiating. DEEL, Thelma F.
Thelma Ferrell Deel, 96, of Fincastle passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George William Deel, and parents, Paris Randolph and Nolia Austin Ferrell.
Survivors include her daughter, Beth Deel of Fincastle; sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Deel of Fincastle, Randy and Doreen Deel of Buchanan, John and Genia Deel of Clifton Forge, Jimmy and Vicky Deel of Fincastle; sister, Wanda L. Parker of Daleville, and grandchildren, Logan, Kaitlyn, Joshua and Jordan Deel.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. J.R. Graybill officiating. Interment was in Mill Creek Cemetery. HIPES, F. Leslie
Fredrick Leslie Hipes, 78, of Fincastle, died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at LewisGale Medical Center following a long period of declining health.
Leslie was born in Buchanan on February 24, 1939 and lived in the area all his life, and on White Church Road for more than 50 years. He was the son of the late Waldo J. and Gladys L. Austin Hipes.
Leslie was a diesel mechanic, retiring from Pepsi after more than 20 years of service. He was a man who lived life on his own terms: an avid collector, enjoyed auctions, member of the NRA, avid outdoorsman, and good father and father-in-law.
In addition to his parents, Leslie was preceded in death by his brother, Robert, and is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Russell and Clarisa Shepherd; daughter and son-in-law Jenette and Bill McClanahan, all of New Castle; one granddaughter, Caitlin Bennett; and his cat, Elsie.
A graveside service honoring Leslie’s life was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery (White Church), 2357 Mt. Pleasant Church Road, Fincastle with his son, Pastor Russell Shepherd, officiating. The family received friends in the fellowship hall following the graveside service.

MAY, Betty M.
Betty Ann Montgomery May of Buchanan passed away on April 9, 2017 after a short illness.
She was a graduate of Buchanan High School and the Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg and Florida Hospital in Winter Park/Orlando, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paxton, Sr. and Ella Montgomery, and siblings, David, Harry, and Paxton Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth; daughter, Ann; sons, Alan and his wife Peggy of Lynchburg, Steve of Kissimmee, Fla., and Robert and fiancée Debbie of Buchanan; siblings, Mary Bryant of Buchanan, Charles Montgomery of Buchanan, Doris and Roddy Doss of Winter Haven, Fla., Margaret and Dr. James Nathe of Waynesboro, Grace and Walter Alexander of Buchanan, Sara and Donald Britt, of Eagle Rock; sisters-in-law, Gwen Montgomery of Eagle Rock, Nancy and Ralph Hickman of Lynchburg; and many grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Woody and the Rev. Greg Doss officiating.
