Did you know that Botetourt County was once home to a normal school – a special kind of institution dedicated to training teachers? The Botetourt Normal School, established in the early 20th century, played a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of the region.

In time, the school grew and evolved, eventually becoming Daleville College. Though it no longer exists today, its legacy continues through the generations of educators it helped shape and the deep roots it left in the community’s educational history.

This report card, dated April 16, 1897, for Miss Ora Lankford gives a glimpse into some of the classes taught at Botetourt Normal. Miss Lankford scored high in botany and deportment, as well as U.S. History and language!

This report card was donated to Botetourt County Historical Society, Inc. by Luella Graves Lankford, Thomas Henry Lankford, and Madeline C. Bunn and is on display in the upstairs gallery that highlights education throughout Botetourt County.

The Botetourt Historical Museum in Fincastle is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and on Sundays from 2-4 p.m.
