The Lord Botetourt girls edged James River, 2-1, in an intra-county soccer game in Daleville last week.
LB’s Sidney Keyes opened the scoring early in the first half, finishing off an assist from Brianna Paivanas barely seven minutes into the contest. That was the only score of the half first half.
Heather Finley scored a second goal for Lord Botetourt midway through the second half with an assist from Briana Myers. Kaitlyn McClung scored the only goal for James River with five minutes remaining in the game, sparking a flurry of activity in the closing moments of the match. The Knights brought everyone forward, including keeper Colleen Peery, in the closing minutes in an attempt to tie the game but LB held on for the win.
River keeper Peery had 19 saves in the game. The Cavaliers used two keepers in the match, as Olivia Assenat recorded 10 saves in the first half and Chloe Beasley recorded five in the second half.
The Cavaliers remained undefeated after three games with a 4-0 win over Franklin County on Thursday in Rocky Mount. Finley recorded the first (three-goal) hat trick of the season, and she was assisted by Briana Paivanas on two goals and Sidney Keyes on the other. Myers capped the night off with the final goal.
River was also back in action Thursday, taking a 3-0 win at Northside. The Knights came out strong from the opening whistle, scoring early and playing well. Catherine Amos opened the scoring after seven minutes, finishing with an assist from McClung. A minute later Grace Dye found the back of the net on a free kick to make it 2-0. Olivia Baker scored with an assist from Morgan Bryan with 28 minutes remaining in the half to account for the final score. Peery made five saves for the Knights, who are now 2-1.
River is back in action next Monday, April 9, with a game at Giles. LB returns from spring break on Tuesday, April 10, with a home match against William Byrd.
