Fincastle Mennonite School Fall Festival September 28
The Fincastle Mennonite School will hold its annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. The school is located at 247 Wheatland Road, Buchanan.
Being made on site will be barbecue chicken, fried pies, donuts and apple cider. Also available to purchase will be chicken dinners, baked goods, drinks, crafts and homemade cards. The chicken dinners are $8 and consist of a barbecued chicken leg quarter, calico beans, cole slaw and homemade dinner roll.
The school students will sing at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Lauderdale Community House, which the school occupies, will be open to walk through. A slide show of the history and current use will play continuously.
Poker run, pork chop dinners to benefit Botetourt children
September 28 is the big day for Toys 4 Bot-E-Tots Annual Poker Run and Pork Chop Dinners at the VFW on US 220. Pork Chops are prepared by Lord Botetourt’s FFA. Registration for the poker run begins at 9 a.m. There is a $15 registration fee. First bike is out at 10 a.m., last bike in at 1 p.m. Pork chop dinners are $10, serving time is 11-2. There will be a limited number sold at the door. To pre-order contact Matt Ward or Nellie Ward. There will be a bake sale and a door raffle. Grand prize for door raffle is a handmade quilt. There will be numerous second place prizes. Tickets for raffle are $1 each or 6 for $5. All monies raised will support the Angels program for children in Botetourt County.

- Town of Buchanan Fall Clean Up – A dumpster will be available for town residents to use on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The dumpster will be located in the Town Park parking lot near the basketball courts. Be sure to bring proof of town residency, such as your water bill or tax bill. Appliances, furniture and other household items are allowed if you can load them into the tall dumpster yourself. Brush, leaves, tires, construction debris and toxic items including oil, paint, batteries, pesticides or any other chemicals are not allowed.
Program on pruning shrubs, trees at Buchanan Library
Are you stumped by how and when to prune your shrubs and trees? Do you wonder if you can do this yourself? Barbara Leach, a Roanoke Master Gardener, will be at the Buchanan Library on Friday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. to explain the timing and techniques of pruning. Everyone is invited to this free program. Book and bake sales at Fincastle Library
The Friends of the Fincastle Library will be holding their annual book and bake sale on the following dates:
Thursday, September 27 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
Friday, September 28 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturday, September 29 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Shop for great deals on books, movies, music, baked goods, and more. Most items will be priced between 50 cents and$1. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Fincastle Library. Republican Women meeting October 1
The Botetourt County Republican Women will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The meeting will be held at the Fincastle Library in the community meeting room and will begin with light refreshments at 6:30. Tickets for the Botetourt County Republican Committee’s 53rd Annual Ham Dinner will be on sale. Members will also be discussing Mountain Magic. Interested women are invited to attend.
Historical Society Founders Day Dinner October 25
The Botetourt County Historical Society will hold its 13th annual Founders Day Dinner on Friday, Oct. 25. It begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Fincastle United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 137 S. Church Street in Fincastle.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Peter Coogan, a professor at Hollins University, whose topic will be “October 1944: A World at War.” Coogan teaches American foreign relations, the history of international relations, revolution and war in Vietnam and modern American political history. He has conducted numerous seminars and published articles on British and American national security policy in the 20th century.

Used Book Sale coming up in Buchanan
The Friends of the Buchanan Library will be holding their Used Book Sale, Friday, October 4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, October 5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the basement of the Buchanan Library. There are hundreds of hardbacks for $1 and paperbacks priced at 50 cents for sale. Choose from fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, craft books, and children’s books. VHSs, DVDs, and CDs will be offered for $1 per bag. The basement of the library may be accessed from the Buchanan Library main entrance or from the rear entrance off of Lowe Street. The library is accepting donations of used books for the sale (no textbooks, medical books, encyclopedias, out of date computer books, or magazines). All proceeds from the Used Book Sale will help fund the children’s and adult programs and special projects at the Buchanan Library. The library is located at 19795 Main Street, phone 928-3005.
Botetourt GOP Ham Dinner October 12
The 53rd annual Botetourt County Republican Ham dinner will be held Saturday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Daleville. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained by call Donald Helms at 550-397-1796.
Bingo fundraiser for Mike Walters
An afternoon of Pampered Chef Bingo to benefit Mike Walters of Buchanan will be held at the Buchanan Volunteer Firehouse in Buchanan on October 12. Walters was injured in an accident in February and is in need of financial help.
The event kicks off with vendor shopping at 10 a.m. and bingo starting promptly at 11. Food and drinks will available for purchase. Bingo tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the bingo. Purchase bingo tickets by September 30 and receive an extra cover-all card.

Knights of Columbus fish fry October 4
The Knights of Columbus will have another fish fry on Friday, Oct. 4 from 5-7 p.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration, 7624 Roanoke Road, Fincastle. Eat in or take out for $10 for ages 8 and older (free for ages 7 and under). The menu is lightly breaded founder (optional chicken nuggets for children), sweet cornbread, fries, homemade slaw and desserts. A 50/50 drawing will be held. There are no advance ticket sales.

Booby Bootcamp to benefit local cancer patient Deedra Gill
BOCO Fit Rage is having the Sixth Annual Booby Bootcamp on October 5, beginning at 10 a.m. This event started after Kristen’s (BOCO Fit Rage’s owner) best friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. They raised money for Kimberly Saunders Wyrick to help her with medical costs and it was such a success that it was decided to make it an annual event to help a local woman in the fight.
It will be held at BOCO Fit Rage, 106 Stony Battery Road, Troutville.
This event is not about the workout, although it will be fun and for all fitness levels. It is about women fighting a hard battle. This year, Booby Bootcamp is raising funds for Deedra Gill. The workout will begin at 10 a.m., followed by stories from survivors andthose still fighting, raffle prizes and more.
The cost to participate is a minimum donation of $10. All proceeds will be given to Deedra.
Former recipients are Kimberly Saunders Wyrick, Sherry Hall Callahan, Cindy Stacy Booth, Dee-Dee Simpson and C.L. Booth.

Democrats plan Red, White and Blue Jeans Dinner
The Botetourt Democratic Party will sponsor a Red, White and Blue Jeans Dinner on Monday, Oct. 21 at the Fincastle Firehouse, 25 Vine Street. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Special guests will be House of Delegates candidates Christian Worth, Democrat running in Lexington, and Jennifer Lewis, Democrat running in Waynesboro.

Drawing for P. Buckley Moss print October 17
