One explanation of capitalism

I have never been able to understand, during my 67 years on this earth, why the word “socialism” is so damned in this society. I have always understood that socialism is a type of governing so that all of society benefits. The opposite of this would be feudalism, which is a type of government where society works for the benefit of a few.
The first person who tried to explain capitalism was a Briton named Adam Smith. Smith said that the most important factor in capitalism is the consumer and all effort should be toward satisfying the consumer. All the consumer wants is low prices and a ready supply of goods.
Smith points out, though, that merchants want the opposite. Merchants want high prices and a limited supply of goods. Smith points out that much of the British government’s disastrous trade policy came at the instigation of London merchants. Smith warns that “the government of an exclusive company of merchants is, perhaps, the worst of all government for any country whatsoever.”
Smith saw that specialization affects individuals in a negative way because it narrows his view of the whole picture affecting society and the only way to prevent this “deformity” of human nature is by educating the populace. Smith warns that a mass of ignorant, culturally degraded citizens easily becomes an immense drag on a society. They become easy prey to demagogues and dictators and applaud every attempt to undermine the foundation of that “natural liberty,” which they have enjoyed in the first place.

Reader says Biden’s plan will break the country

I want to thank Christine Liana for her truthful letter that she wrote in last week’s edition. Between the hate-filled Democrats in Washington and their followers, the truth hasn’t been printed very often for the past four years.
Our president was voted into office. He has gotten nothing but disrespect and lies. He is strong willed and says what he thinks. With all the trash that’s been thrown at him, he has to be strong. If he hadn’t done what he did for our country, we would have a lot more deaths.
Joe Biden has done nothing except insult the people of color for 47 years and tell Trump in a 21-minute speech a couple of months ago to do the same thing for the virus he had already done.
The DNC never mentioned God in their convention. Everything was hate for Trump. I’m ashamed of people in our country that are out to destroy it. Democrat cities have allowed murder and destruction. Biden says it is a myth. The riots are peaceful. People that commit crimes should be handled by the courts.
Biden’s make America better plan will break our country. He doesn’t have a clue. Maybe you ought to check Harris’s record in California.
Just remember, God knows who the real hate-filled liars are.

We want to say a great “big thank you” to all those who baked homemade baked goods and donated them to us for our homemade baked goods sale on Friday, Oct. 9. Also to all those folks who stopped by and purchased baked goods, and for monetary donations we received as well.
It was a great success in efforts to raise monies needed by Eagle Rock Improvement Association to preserve the three remaining historical lime kilns in Eagle Rock.
