If you’ve visited the Blue Ridge Library recently, you’ve probably noticed a new smiling face. That’s Sarah Rodgers, our Branch Manager!
Sarah joined Botetourt County Libraries in May, preparing to reopen the building to the public in June. She’s the first full-time branch manager at Blue Ridge, since the branch had previously been managed by the Library Director in a dual role. We’re excited that the Blue Ridge community can now receive the full attention it deserves.
Sarah has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from James Madison University, a Master’s in Library and Information Science from Drexel University, and a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management from Virginia Tech. Her work experience includes archeological digs, museums and a bookstore. She has almost 17 years’ experience in public libraries, filling a variety of roles at Roanoke County Public Libraries before coming to Botetourt: Circulation and Reference Assistant, Teen Librarian, Vinton Branch Manager, and Children’s Divisional Librarian.
She has “always loved libraries and utilized them,” even though as a child, she planned to be a paleontologist or a veterinarian. Turns out, she really enjoys working with people. “I love being able to help people and shift based on community needs,” Sarah says. It’s no wonder that Sarah’s heroes are fictional characters like Wonder Woman and real life characters like Nelson Mandela – people who dedicated their lives to making the world better for others.
In the last few months, Sarah has spent time getting to know her new team, patrons and workflow better. “Libraries are evolving, and the communities we serve are constantly changing. Meeting people where they are and adding a service of value is what I enjoy most.” She has a librarian’s ability to dig down to a patron’s real question and tailor services to their needs. Library services are “not ‘one size fits all,’” she advises. “Listen to what the person is really asking for.” As someone with a special interest in local government, Sarah also notes that she’s “particularly excited to work with other departments in the County to enhance services to the community.”
Of course, life isn’t all work. Sarah has multiple hobbies, including gardening, antique roses, working outside, and foreign films. She admits to being “a bit of a nerd” who can “debate the merits of Star Wars and Star Trek, but ultimately enjoys Doctor Who most.” Sarah also plays on the Roanoke Women’s Rugby Team. “If I’m ever limping or you see bruises, it means it was a good game,” she laughs.
It’s safe to assume that Sarah loves to read, and her interests are eclectic: African history, nonfiction and fiction addressing cultural/social topics, graphic novels (comic books), children’s fiction, picture books, and simply ridiculous fiction. Some of her favorite authors are Christopher Moore, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, Robert Beatty, Mo Willems, Chuck Palahinuk, and more.
Sarah lives in Troutville with her husband K.B. and her 4-year-old daughter Ellie. The next time you’re in the Blue Ridge area, stop by the library and meet her!
