Betty Kohen Spigle of Roanoke passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

She was the widow of the late Jack R. Spigle and the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip and Kate Kohen of Fincastle. She was also preceded in death by her son, Stephen Mark Spigle.

Survivors include her son, David Spigle (Leslie), and her two daughters, Shelly Higginbotham (John) and Katey Lewis (Burton). Also surviving are her grandchildren, Meghan Dowker (Kevin), Rebecca Austin (Kenny), Will Spigle, Luke Higginbotham, Rachel Higginbotham, Sydney Wills (Nate), Camden Spigle, and Carter Spigle; and great-grandchildren, Danica Austin, Kenny Austin, Paxton Wills, Hudson Wills, and Sophie Wills. Other survivors are a niece, Kelly Archie (Pete), and nephew, Max Spigle III.

Betty was born in Buchanan on November 24, 1931, and later moved to Fincastle. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1953. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Jack, and moved to Blacksburg while he completed his studies at Virginia Tech. After living in Blacksburg, they moved to the Cave Spring area in Roanoke. She was a wonderful third grade teacher at Cave Spring Elementary School until her retirement in 1996.

Betty was a member of Colonial Presbyterian Church. Betty loved the Lord, her family and friends, and her flowers. She was the type of mother we all would hope to have and is going to be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank all of Betty’s caregivers and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the wonderful care and love they gave her.

A private family graveside service was held in Godwin Cemetery in Fincastle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), P.O. Box 5021, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5021. Condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
