LB girls wrestle in women’s tournament, varsity team is fourth at Turner Ashby

Three Lord Botetourt High girls wrestled at the Lady Cat Invitational at Radford High School on December 21. Juniors Serenity Shearer and Jasmine Andrade both took seconds and freshman Trinity Martin took a fourth.

“This is the second year in a row that Radford has hosted a girls’ event and it’s currently the only girls’ wrestling tournament in Southwest Virginia,” said LB coach Paul Craft. “While the tournament is great and well run, we’d like to see more tournaments in this part of the state so that our girls don’t have to travel to Richmond and Northern Virginia every weekend. We’re very proud of the progress our girls are making and we hope to see girls’ wrestling continue to grow not just at Lord Botetourt but throughout the local, regional, and state level.”

On December 20 the Cavaliers wrestled at Turner Ashby and finished fourth with 11 scoring wrestlers and a few backups.

“Pulling off fourth place in that tournament with only 11 scorers was a great showing for us,” said Craft. “We ran up against some 5A and 6A schools and competed with them. We learned a lot from that tournament.”

The wrestlers will be back on the mats January 2 at Franklin County, then wrestle in the Old Dominion Cup event at Roanoke College on January 4. James River returns for a two-day tournament at Liberty Christian Academy on January 3 and 4.
