County updates northern residents on change in trash collections

Residents of northern Botetourt County recently observed a change in who is collecting their trash. GFL Environmental, the company who formerly collected waste in areas of north county, recently notified residents that the company would no longer provide its collection services. WasteCo, a Lynchburg-based waste management provider, has now taken over collection duties in that area.

Some residents have claimed GFL never reached out to notify them near the end of 2024 about the change. A GFL customer service representative recently shared that customers received phone calls, emails, and notifications printed on mailed bills that the change would be approaching.

At the end of the year, residents witnessed GFL take their trashcans, with some claiming the company took personal waste bins as well. The representative explained that taking personal carts is “absolutely not our practice.”

Botetourt County recently shared that it contracts with private companies (like GFL, WasteCo) for the disposal of residential and certain commercial trash. WasteCo will begin offering service in Botetourt County this month, mostly to the northern part of the county with a few other residential areas in the southern area. Residents who are in the WasteCo service area will receive a mailer from WasteCo with more information.  Find out more about WasteCo by visiting: https://wastecova.com/.
