Richard “Dick” Lee Winand, Sr., 87, of Buchanan, passed away at home with his family on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Dick was born on March 14, 1937, in Maryland, to the late Walter Emanuel Winand and Pauline Clara Olinger. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Sonny; and sister, Patsy.
He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Joan Coale Winand; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Winand, Jr. and wife, Jan; James and Lisa Winand; Luke and Carol Winand; and Mark and Kristie Winand. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Destiny Winand, Michelle Winand, Jackson Winand, Casey Winand, Blake and Molly Winand, Dustin Winand (Katelyn), Evan Gilliam (Chelsea), and Olivia Gilliam; one great-grandson, Bracksley Winand; and sister, Susy.
Dick was a proud Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He had a long, successful career as a lineman and electrician. Dick was affectionately known an “Pop Pop” by his family. He had a green thumb and loved spending time working in his many beautiful gardens. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage and talked frequently of his time growing up on a farm in Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 12 to 2 p.m. with memorial services at 2 p.m. in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastor J.R. Graybill officiating.
