The Lord Botetourt girls won three more basketball games last week to improve to 14-1 overall, but all that gets them is a battle for first in a stacked Blue Ridge District.
The Cavaliers were set to host Staunton River on Tuesday of this week but results were too late for publication. The Eagles were also 14-1 before their trip to Daleville, and both teams have one loss to William Fleming. The Colonels lead the BRD with a 4-0 district mark and a 13-2 overall record.
Botetourt kept pace with three wins last week. The girls opened the week with a 54-22 win over Franklin County in Rocky Mount. Madilyn Winterton led the team with 20 points and six assists and Maddie Caron had 16 points and six rebounds. Abby Kingery had seven steals.
Last Thursday the Cavs hosted a strong Patrick Henry team in a non-district game and won 44-31. The highlight of the night was senior Winterton scoring her 1,000th point as a Cavalier. That does not include her freshman year when Winterton was at Rockbridge County High, as the Lenoir Rhyne commit has scored 1,000 points in just two and a half seasons at LB.
Winterton needed four points to reach 1,000 but wasn’t aware of it. She scored the needed points on two free throws and was surprised when the game was stopped to present her the ball.
“She told me before the season to not tell her because she wanted it to happen organically and focus on the task at hand,” said LB coach Renee Favaro. “I told her parents after the Franklin County game that she was close and to be prepared. She was definitely surprised and a little confused at first when we buzzed the horn and the announcement was made.”
On Friday the Cavs made it a three-win week with a 66-24 home win over Northside. Winterton led the team with 20 points and Caron had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Maggie Hoover had 13.
“This team is incredibly close-knit and the way they rally around each other and play for each other is palpable,” said Favaro. “We played this game with six kids, and I am super proud of the character and hearts of these girls.”
The Cavaliers have another busy week. After Tuesday’s game with Staunton River, they’ll host E.C. Glass tonight and William Byrd on Friday.
