Helen Quarles Watts, born August 11,1923 in Indian Rock of Buchanan, left her Earthly home to go live in her Heavenly home on February 14, 2025.
She joined Indian Rock Baptist Church at an early age of 9, where she stayed a faithful member until her Lord and Savior called her home. She never missed a Sunday and was known as the Mother of the Church. Helen attended Indian Rock School and Botetourt Training School; she graduated first of five Black girls in both 10th and 11th grades at Academy Hill School.
In 1945 she married the late Charlie R. Watts and within that union they were blessed with three children, Betty (Ralph) Terry, both deceased; Thomas (Karen), both deceased; and Leonard.
Helen was best known for her heart of gold. If you needed something and she had it, it was yours. Helen tried to instill in her family the value of forgiveness of others and to treat others with respect and decency, despite how they sometimes treated you. Helen was a devout Christian until her last breath. Although she was hard of hearing, due to nerve damage, and had arthritis in her knees, she never complained, because she knew she was in God’s care.
Helen has gone to Heaven to join her beloved husband, daughter, son, and grandson, Lawrence (Dwayne) Lee III. Sadly, she leaves behind to mourn, her youngest son, Leonard (Buchanan); granddaughter, Cynthia (Lynn) Hayth (Hampton); grandchildren, Micheal Watts, Meagan Watts, Adrian Watts, and Aaron Watts (all of Glasgow); great-grandchildren, Xavier, Alisha (Tim), Amber, Ayden, Ashley, Allena, Aliya, Riley, Zoe, Adrian, Zyla, Julian; five great-great-grandchildren, four sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews.
If Helen were here today, she would say “Be kind to one another, for that is the way of the Lord and He will bless you for it.”
Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. with funeral services at 2p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025 at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. Interment followed in Indian Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
