Small, pocket-sized Bibles were often carried as personal tokens of faith and comfort, especially by soldiers during wartime. Their compact size made them easy to keep close, tucked into a uniform, pocket, or a satchel, serving as both a spiritual guide and a reminder of home and loved ones.
This small linen-covered Bible is from 1756 and published by Adrian Watkins, “His Majesty’s Printer” in Scotland. On the page between the Old and New Testaments is written: “Robert Rieley was born on February 23, 1781.” There is no other identifying information. This is one of the oldest Bibles in the museum’s collection.
This Bible is on view as part of “The Good Word: Family Bibles from Botetourt County” display that is now up at the Botetourt Museum of History & Culture in Fincastle. Hours are 10-2 Monday-Saturday and 2-4 Sunday. Group tours or other hours may be made by calling 540-473-0148.
