Lord Botetourt students in Bruce Ingram’s English 10 Advanced Studies class had the opportunity last week to speak with World War II U.S. Navy veteran Marion Noel who was a member of Task Force 58 in The Battle of Iwo Jima. February 19 marked the 80th anniversary of the historic battle. Ingram has coordinated veterans to come speak to his class over the years. Noel is a 1942 graduate of Eagle Rock High School.
Ingram’s students presented PowerPoint presentations on the war that included a look back at The Battle of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Jewish struggle during “The Night of Broken Glass” that occurred in 1938. The students involved in these projects included Sydney Yates, Joel Butler, Elaina Brown, Chase Peck, Ryan Staton, and Rose Janosz.
Marci Brumberg, who has worked with Holocaust survivors, provided additional information to the class about what the Jewish community experienced during that time. Brumberg has visited Ingram’s class several times to talk about the Jewish faith and a first-person novel about the Holocaust entitled “Night” written by Eli Wisel recently read by the class.
Students asked questions to Noel and Brumberg relating to what the students learned during their studies of World War II. When asked about the experience meeting Noel and Brumberg, students shared their appreciation for having the opportunity to speak with these individuals, and that was an “eye-opening” experience.
