Botetourt County Public Schools (BCPS) Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Russ announced that he would be retiring at the end of the school year in his monthly newsletter sent to parents last Thursday afternoon.
In the newsletter, Russ stated, “I want to share with you that I have made the decision to retire as Division Superintendent of Botetourt County Public Schools, effective July 1, 2025. My time in Botetourt these past five years have been the most rewarding of my 34-year career, and I have seen firsthand the dedication of our School Board, educators, staff, families, and community in providing the very best for our students.
“Because of the hard work and dedication of so many, Botetourt County Public Schools continues to be a place where students grow, learn, and succeed. The strong foundation we have built together will carry on, and I have no doubt that the future of BCPS is bright.”
BCPS Communications Specialist Mike Moser said last week that “teachers and central office staff are equal parts happy for (Russ) but very sad to see him go. His leadership style has been one of putting family and staff first. He brought much-needed calm and ‘healing’ following the sudden departure of the previous superintendent. It’s been a wonderful five years under his leadership.”
Currently, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Janet Womack “may serve as an interim superintendent until a replacement is hired, but that remains to be seen,” Moser noted.
BCPS has begun the official superintendent search process through the Virginia School Boards Association, which was the main purpose of this week’s special School Board meeting that took place on Tuesday.
