This c. 1816 Pennsylvania long rifle was changed from flintlock to percussion. The original handmade stock is curly maple with a thin front. The octagon barrel has 7 grooves at its end. The original low front sight shows that the rifleman was a good shot. There is a brass set trigger card and brass butt plate, but no side plate. It was made in Lancaster, Pa. Davy Crockett is said to have used the same type of rifle.
Robert Hundley donated this rifle to the Botetourt Museum of History and Culture in 2019 in memory of the rifle’s owner, Raymond F. Hundley, Jr., who was a resident of Sinking Creek in northern Botetourt. Mrs. Raymond Hundley shared that the rifle was given to her by her Hancock cousin while they lived in Richmond. It is displayed in the Back Gallery over the fireplace downstairs. BCHS always appreciates more information by calling 540-473-0148.
