The Lord Botetourt softball team picked up two big wins last week as Cavalier pitchers dominated Blacksburg and Magna Vista. The Cavs shut out both, winning 3-0 in Blacksburg and 10-0 over the Warriors on Saturday in Franklin County’s “Battle of the Bases” in Rocky Mount.
“We had a great week,” said LB coach Megan Cook. “Blacksburg is a good hitting team so I knew we would be tested, but our defense truly shined.”
Phoenix Humphries gained the win in the circle in Blacksburg by allowing just four hits and no runs over four innings while Olivia Pierce came on in relief, allowing no hits and fanning two in three innings. Autumn Russell had a tremendous game offensively with two solo home runs in the first and fourth innings.
On Saturday in Franklin County, Russell set the tone again, crushing a two-run home run in the third inning against Magna Vista. LB had a dozen hits in this game as Callie Kidd, Abby Perkey, Pierce, and Gracie Sargent had two hits each. Pierce pitched and shut out the Warriors with a one-hitter, striking out 13 and walking none.
“It was collectively a team effort,” said Cook. “A great outing for us overall.”
The Cavs improved to 3-1 with the two wins and were scheduled to play Jefferson Forest at home on Tuesday. They’ll host Staunton River on Friday before heading to Vinton for a game with William Byrd on Tuesday, April 15.
