“Botetourt County & The War Between The States, Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War” was written by Edwin (Ed) L. McCoy. He is the former editor of The Fincastle Herald and published newspaper articles on his research from 2011 to 2015. In 2017 this book was copyrighted and published by the Botetourt County Historical Society to include more of his research. It is available in the Museum and contains historic photographs. Stories from 1861-1865 include rulings by the Botetourt County Courthouse, weapons, prisons, hospitals, tanneries, furnaces, local soldiers and their families. One quote from his book is “…the Botetourt Artillery was a revered unit because of its history in the Western Theater and at Vicksburg, Miss.” Ed is giving a knowledgable program at the Buchanan Community House (Wilson Walker Warehouse) on Thursday, April 24 at 11 a.m. The Civil War Weekend in Buchanan is April 25-27. This spring is the 160th Anniversary of the end of the war. The last battle of the Civil War was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13, 1865.
