The Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Sunday, April 27 at the Allen-Carper Cemetery in Eagle Rock to honor the memory of the Revolutionary War Patriots who are buried there. The America 250! Committee project, for 2025, was the improvement of the Allen-Carper Cemetery and the placement of benches for all to enjoy.
It is the goal of this committee to complete one major project each year, until the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026, that will honor the memory of Revolutionary War Patriots. In addition to these major projects, the committee, with the input from members, strives to showcase a monthly article about a Patriot of one of the members in The Fincastle Herald, which has been successfully done since April 2023.
The goal this year was to complete a meaningful project that would have a lasting impact in the community. With the help of many, DAR members made several improvements to bring renewed recognition and interest to Allen-Carper Cemetery. They were able to repair the fence, clean the land of branches and debris and install two benches so that it can be an inviting place for all to enjoy in the years to come.
With the help from Sirens & Salutes, a local charitable organization committed to honoring and memorializing first responders and veterans, founded by Bill Price, the DAR was able to have the fence repaired that had been damaged by weather and time. Our decision to install benches was based on the idea that they would not only be inviting but would help bring visual recognition of this cemetery. Committee member Alicia White-Braxton and her husband, Bryan, placed gravel, installed two benches and placed DAR recognition plaques on the seats.
With dedication and hard work, the America 250! Committee has created a lasting tribute that they hope will be appreciated for many years to come.
