The James River girls will be in Radford tonight for the first of a big home-and-home soccer series with the Bobcats. After tonight’s game at Radford the Knights will host the Bobcats next Monday, April 12.
River is 4-1 in the Three Rivers District and their only loss was to Glenvar, the defending Class 2 state champions. The Knights are 7-4 overall.
“The season is going well,” said River coach Bill Smith. “The girls are working together nicely. We are playing tough and growing.”
Last Thursday in Springwood the girls shut out Alleghany, 8-0. Rhaya Kitt scored three goals in the first half and finished with four for the game. Sonny Sharp had two goals and Sophia Martin and Avery Saunders had one each. Jordyn Simmons had four assists as the game ended early by the “eight goal” rule.
On Friday the girls lost to a Class 3 Little Giants team in Waynesboro, 4-1. River’s score came on a late drive by Payton White, who found a gap for a strong left-footed shot to the upper corner, barely deflected by the Giants keeper into the path of Kitt who finished for the goal. Kylee Aaron finished with 32 saves for the Knights.
“The level of effort by the visitors when victory was surely out of reach was impressive,” said Smith. “The final whistle blew on a game at high intensity, despite the lopsided score.”
