The James River girls will open the Region 2C soccer tournament on Friday on the road against an opponent that was still to be determined at press time.
“We play Friday in the quarter-finals of the Region 2C tournament but we won’t know our opponent until tonight,” River coach Bill Smith said on Tuesday. “It will be either Radford or Nelson. Either way we will travel.”
The Knights ended the regular season at 10-6-1 after getting shut out at home by Radford last Tuesday, 2-0.
“As expected the game was played end to end with strong attacks by both teams early,” said Smith. “James River had a little more possession early, but failed to convert.”
Last Friday the Knights traveled to Bath County and took a 6-0 win in a non-district game. Ayden Jennings had a three-goal hat trick for the Knights in the win.
River also played Glenvar last week and fell 7-1 to the defending Class 2 state champs. Sophia Martin scored on a penalty kick for River’s goal and Kylee Aaron kept it close for a while with 23 saves.
“The Knights continued to fight on to the end,” said Smith. “There was much energetic play and some close calls, but the strong Glenvar defense kept their goal safe.”
Glenvar finished the regular season undefeated and will host a region game Friday.
