Lord Botetourt freshman Ethan Steryous is the Region 3D singles tennis champion and will play in the Virginia High School League Class 3 championship this weekend at Liberty University.
Ethan will play Thomas Lapp of Meridian High School on Friday at 9 a.m. in a state semifinal match. The other semifinal has Brader Eby of Western Albemarle against John Sunstone of Tabb, and the two winners will meet for the state championship on Saturday at Liberty at 9 a.m.
Steryous earned his spot in the state final four with a Region 3D championship last week. He won his opener over Bassett’s number one, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated Keaton Bartley of Hidden Valley, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinal. In the championship match Ethan beat the Cave Spring number one, 6-4, 6-3, to punch his ticket to the state.
Ethan and fellow freshman Davis Kidd represented LB in region doubles play. They won their opener over William Byrd, then took down Magna Vista in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1. Their season came to an end when they fell to the Hidden Valley doubles team in the region final at Hollins University last week. The LB pair won the first set, 7-5, but lost the next two 6-3 and 10-7.
The girls qualified for the Class 3 state tournament but lost to Western Albemarle in the opening round. The Warriors downed LB, 5-0, in Crozet last Friday to end the season for the LB girls.
