The Lord Botetourt boys saw their soccer season come to an end one win short of the state championship tournament. The Cavaliers lost at Christiansburg in the semifinal round of the Region 3D tournament, 7-2.
The Blue Demons opened hot with three goals in the first 10 minutes of play. Things settled down at that point and the remainder of the half was scoreless with the home team leading 3-0 at intermission.
Botetourt drew first blood in the second half. Will Hall drove the right side with a breakaway to find Isaiah Lankford on the far side, and Isaiah tapped it in to cut the lead to 3-1 with plenty of time remaining. Unfortunately, the Demons used the time to their advantage, putting three more goals on the board for an insurmountable 6-1 lead.
The Cavaliers kept playing hard, and Hall scored on a breakaway to make it 6-2. The Blue Demons then put some icing on the cake for a late goal, and the 7-2 win clinched a spot in the state tournament. They shut out Magna Vista in the region championship, 8-0, and took a 15-3 record into Tuesday’s state quarterfinal game in Christiansburg against 17-3 Turner Ashby.
Botetourt finished the season with an 11-8 record. The Cavs were 7-3 in the Blue Ridge District, finishing second.
