Sheriff Ward reminds drivers to stay alert as school year begins
The Sheriff’s Office “Schools Open Campaign” is under way to ensure the safest possible traffic environment in and around school zones. As students return to classrooms across the county, the Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to slow down, remain alert, and follow all traffic laws to keep the children safe.
The first weeks of the school year often bring heavier morning and afternoon traffic, along with increased pedestrian activity near schools and bus stops. “Back-to-school season is an exciting time for our students, teachers, and families,” said Sheriff Matt Ward. “But it’s also a time when we all need to pay a little extra attention on the roads. The safety of our children depends on it.”
Key safety reminders include:
- Obey all school zone speed limits – fines for speeding in school zones are higher.
- Stop for school buses – when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended; it’s the law.
- Be extra cautious near crosswalks and intersection – especially during pick-up and drop-off hours.
- Put the phone down – distracted driving is one of the leading causes of preventable crashes.
The Sheriff’s Office will also be increasing patrols in school zones to encourage safe driving habits and ensure traffic laws are followed.
“We want every student to start and end their day safely,” Sheriff Ward added. “Let’s work together as a community to make this school year a safe and successful one.”
