Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office hosting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event provides a safe, convenient, and responsible way for residents to dispose of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications. Across the nation, hundreds of thousands of pounds of medications are collected each year, helping prevent drug misuse, accidental poisoning, and environmental contamination.
Residents can drop off their unneeded medications at two convenient locations: Penelope’s in Daleville and Solomon’s Mission in Buchanan. The process is free and anonymous.
For anyone unable to attend Saturday’s event, a secure prescription drop box is available year-round in the lobby of the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
By participating in Take Back Day, residents can help ensure that potentially dangerous medications are disposed of safely and responsibly.
Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office issues warning about ‘You’ve Won!’ scam
The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be cautious of scams claiming that they’ve won a large cash prize, vehicle, or sweepstakes. These scams often use well-known names such as Publisher’s Clearing House to appear legitimate.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers contact potential victims by phone, email, mail, or social media, claiming they’ve won a major prize. The scammer then instructs the victim to send money, purchase gift cards, or provide personal information in order to “claim” the winnings. Once the payment or information is sent, the scammer disappears and the promised prize never exists.
Residents are urged to remember:
- Legitimate sweepstakes never require payment to receive a prize
- Never share personal or financial information with unsolicited callers or messages
- If someone pressures you or claims it’s an urgent matter, hang up immediately
- Always verify the legitimacy of the organization through its official website or customer service number before responding
Anyone who believes they may have been contacted or targeted by this type of scam is encouraged to reach out to the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office at 540-928-2200 before sending any money or personal information.
Residents are encouraged to help spread the word, especially among friends and family members, to help keep the community safe from fraud.
