Jerry Carl Dupree, 90, of Buchanan, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marjorie Dudding Dupree; stepdaughter, Karen DeWease; step-grandson, Christopher DeWease and his wife Lyndsie; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Kynleigh, Walker and Isla DeWease. He is also survived by nephews David Dupree and Jeffrey Dupree.

Mr. Dupree was predeceased by his parents, John Carl and Thelma Camper DuPree; his brother, James A. Dupree; and stepson-in-law, Glen DeWease.

Born on April 24, 1935, in Buchanan, Mr. Dupree attended Buchanan High School before enrolling at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1953, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1957. He subsequently received a Master of Education in Guidance from the University of Virginia in August 1964.
Mr. Dupree began his teaching career in Roanoke County Schools in 1957 and retired after over 36 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful member of Buchanan Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and on numerous church committees. He was also deeply committed to community service: he officiated high school football for 31 years, served over 25 years with the Buchanan Rescue Squad—including time as Captain—and held the role of District Vice President of the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads. Jerry was a proud Hokie who followed Virginia Tech football and basketball with enthusiasm. He and Margie shared a joyful life together, filled with love, laughter, and travel. They especially cherished family trips to the beach and to Tennessee, creating lasting memories with their beloved grandson Chris, who brought them endless pride and joy.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the members and friends of Buchanan Baptist Church, and to Pastor Daniel Boone and his wife Sherry of Valley View Baptist Church, for their support and friendship. Special appreciation also goes to Sissy Austin, Jerry’s caregiver for over two years; Mike Dudding; neighbors Gary and Dana Tiller; and many others who offered kindness and encouragement. Gratitude is also extended to Runk & Pratt Senior Living, Carrington Place of Botetourt Commons, and Nayar Hospice.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Buchanan.
