LB, River swimmers open winter season

The Lord Botetourt and James River swimmers hit the pool last week with opening meets. Botetourt was at the Gator Center in Roanoke to swim against William Byrd while River took on Northside and Staunton River at the Hollins University pool.

Botetourt has a new coach in Kieran Liles-McAllister. The Cavs were swept by a strong Byrd team in the opener as the Terriers won the girls’ match, 83.5-56.5 as well as the boys’ match, 96-48.

Highlights for the Cavaliers included a first in the 50 free and a second in the 100 free by Olivia Nicely. Julia Misicko won the 100 fly and was runner-up in the 200 free, and LB won the girls’ 200 free relay.

In the boys meet, Max Mizuba took two firsts. He won the 200 IM in 2:07.98 and the 100 backstroke in 58.89.

River swept the meet at Hollins. The boys defeated Northside, 65 to 49, and Staunton, 67 to 29. The girls also defeated Northside, 91 to 29, and Staunton River, 90 to 29.

First place winners include the boys’ 200 medley relay made up of Harrison Hanna, Kingston Bean, Austin Myers and Joel Barber. Myers was first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and Barber was first in the 50 free and second in the 100 breaststroke. Harrison Hanna was second in the 100 backstroke while Kingston Bean was second in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The girls took first place in the 200 medley relay with Gracie Matre, Sarah Lorman, Kimberlyn Van Auken and Riley Persinger. The also won the 200 freestyle relay with Lydia Jones, Lorman, Van Auken and Persinger.

Individually, Persinger finished first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke while Van Auken was first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Lorman won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Gracie Matre finished second in the 100 backstroke and Jones finished third in the 100 freestyle.

River is scheduled to swim today at Alleghany, weather permitting. On Thursday the Knights have their home opener at the Botetourt YMCA and are sponsoring a food drive. Donations go to Feeding SW VA.

River is scheduled to swim Friday in Wytheville. Next Tuesday the Knights are at Hargrave and the LB team is home at the Botetourt Y.
