The James River soccer teams are hoping to get back on the winning track this week after a rough stretch. The boys were scheduled to play at Nelson County Tuesday and the girls are home to Northside tonight. Both teams play Floyd on Thursday with the boys at home and the girls at Floyd.

The boys were shut out twice last week, both by 8-0 scores. They fell to Glenvar on Thursday and Auburn on Friday, both at home.

The girls were at Glenvar last Thursday and were also shut out, 5-0. The play went both ways for most of the half with both keepers making several saves. The Highlanders’ Gabbie Barba scored with 13 minutes remaining in the half off a corner in a congested penalty area.

The second period was less balanced, with Glenvar having an edge on attacking drives. Barba ended up with a three goal hat trick for Glenvar.

On Monday the Knights hosted Liberty and dropped a 3-1 decision. Avery Saunders scored a first half goal for River and it was 1-1 at the half.

The Minutewomen came out strong in the second half, testing the Knights defense more than in the first period. Both teams made legitimate threats on goal, but the score held until late in the game when  Presley Jefferson scored a back post header off a corner kick from Ava Curfiss with 12 minutes on the clock for the visitors and that proved to be the deciding score. Rhaya Kitt had 16 saves for the Knights.
