History came to life in Botetourt County last weekend as the Town of Buchanan hosted its annual Civil War Weekend at Buchanan Town Park, drawing visitors for three days of living history, demonstrations and re-enactments.
Activities began Friday with a visit from students of Buchanan Elementary School, who helped kick off the event with a hands-on look at local history. Students explored the encampments and displays, including an up-close view of the artillery cannon, as part of their introduction to the weekend’s programming.
Throughout the event, attendees experienced a range of historical activities, including living history camps, demonstrations and guided tours highlighting life during the Civil War era. Presentations covered topics such as uniforms, weapons and civilian life, offering educational opportunities for visitors of all ages.

Re-enactors staged battle demonstrations in Buchanan Town Park, recreating scenes from the period and serving as a centerpiece of the weekend’s activities. Additional events included a street skirmish, historical portrayals and a camp dance, contributing to the immersive atmosphere.
“Civil War Weekend was fantastic,” Buchanan Town Manager Tim Mack shared. “We had a great turnout in both participants and audience, and it was incredible to see how much effort was put into nailing the historical accuracies. It was quite the spectacle! I applaud the performances of the reactors and thank all our participants for bringing history to life over the weekend. All the credit goes to the event’s organizers – John Manspile, the Botetourt Artillery, the Town Improvement Society, and our very own Special Events Coordinator Jessica Bates. Last but certainly not least is the Town Council. I deeply appreciate their continued support of our staff and volunteers, and their commitment to hosting great community-based events.”

The annual event is designed to provide insight into both military and civilian experiences during the Civil War and has become a longstanding tradition in the Buchanan community.
With Civil War Weekend concluded, attention now turns to another upcoming event in town.
The Buchanan Garden Festival is scheduled to take place this weekend. Organizers have announced an updated date of Saturday, May 2, noting a change from the originally planned date. The event is expected to feature local vendors and highlight the seasonal atmosphere of spring in Buchanan.
Community members and visitors are invited to attend and take part in the town’s next gathering as spring events continue in Botetourt County.
