The Botetourt Preservation Partnership is inviting residents and visitors to step back in time at its upcoming “Spirits Trail of 1776” event, an immersive community gathering highlighting local ties to the American Revolution.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 2-6 p.m., the event will be held at Virginia Mountain Vineyards and will feature a mix of history, music and local food in a scenic setting.
Organizers say the program is designed to make history engaging and accessible for all ages. The afternoon will include live music by Michael Proffit and food offerings from FireCraft LLC, alongside educational presentations and interactive experiences.
Historical interpreters from the Fincastle Company will be on site, portraying 18th Century life and sharing stories from the Revolutionary era. Their demonstrations aim to give attendees a firsthand look at the people and events that shaped the region during the nation’s founding.
Two featured presentations will highlight Botetourt County’s role in the Revolution. Steve Aaron will speak about Loyalists in backcountry Virginia, while Carlton Payne will present on the Botetourt County militia and its contributions during the war.
In addition to the talks, guests can explore a walking banner exhibit showcasing key moments from Botetourt’s history. The display is intended to provide a visual complement to the event’s programming and offer additional context about the county’s past.
“Spirits Trail of 1776” is part of Virginia’s VA250 initiative, a statewide effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. It is partially funded by a grant from Virginia Humanities, which supports community-based programs focused on historical education and engagement.
Organizers encourage community members of all ages to attend and take part in the celebration of local heritage.
More information about the event is available on the Botetourt Preservation Partnership’s Facebook page.
