Botetourt is at Byrd for big softball game Friday

The Lord Botetourt softball team will be looking to pick up a big Blue Ridge District win Friday when the Cavaliers take on William Byrd in Vinton. The Cavaliers are battling for position in a tight district race.

LB was scheduled to play a district game at home against Staunton River on Tuesday following a non-district game with Pulaski County in Dublin Monday. That was a slugfest with the host Cougars prevailing, 19-12. The two teams combined for 35 hits while LB’s Callie Kidd had two home runs and nine runs batted in.  Gracie Sargent, Bailey Hutchins, and Olivia Pierce collected multiple hits for LB and Phoenix Humphries and Pierce both saw time in the circle.

“Although we out hit the Cougars, 18 to 17, it ultimately just did not fall our way,” said LB coach Megan Cook.

Last Thursday in Christiansburg it was an entirely different ballgame as the host Blue Demons scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off 1-0 victory.

“It was a true pitchers’ duel,” said Cook. “Olivia conquered the circle in strong fashion, striking out 15 batters and getting her 100th strikeout of this season.”

Botetourt had just two hits, one each by Pierce and Bailey Hutchins.

The Cavs were 6-8 overall prior to Tuesday’s game with Staunton River and 3-2 in the BRD. The girls are scheduled to host Blacksburg in a non-district game on Thursday in Daleville, then head to Vinton Friday and Cave Spring next Monday.
