Sirens and Salutes, a local nonprofit organization that supports veterans, first responders, and their families, will continue its annual Memorial Day tradition later this month by hosting a free community movie night honoring America’s fallen service members and first responders.
This year’s event will feature the film “Taking Chance” at dusk Sunday, May 24, at Hull’s Drive-In Theater in Lexington. The event is free and open to the public. The organization relocated the annual movie event this year because renovations are currently underway at the Buchanan Theatre, where the showing has previously been held.
Sirens and Salutes is also preparing for a major fundraising effort tied to the upcoming celebration of America’s 250th anniversary this year.
As part of those efforts, the organization will host a 4×4 Poker Ride fundraiser Saturday, June 13. Registration will take place from 10-11 a.m. at the Dollar General in Fincastle, with riders departing at 11 a.m.
Organizers said the ride will follow a mostly stock-friendly route through Broad Run featuring 13 water crossings before concluding at the Buchanan Moose Lodge for dinner, drawings and a cake auction.
The fundraiser costs $30 per vehicle and includes two dinners. Additional dinners for non-riders will be available for $15. The first 50 registrants will also receive sling bags. Dinner will include hot dogs or hamburgers, macaroni salad and baked beans.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Sirens and Salutes as the organization continues planning events and activities surrounding the nation’s 250th celebration in July.
