The Lord Botetourt softball team grabbed an early lead but Staunton River rallied for a 4-3 win in last week’s Region 3D quarterfinal game in Moneta. The loss ended the Cavaliers’ season at 11-12.

This one could have gone either way. Lord Botetourt outhit the Eagles, 7-4, with Callie Kidd, Olivia Pierce and Phoenix Humphries collecting two hits each.

“We were just not able to hang on when we needed to most,” said coach Megan Cook. “Walks and defensive miscues wound up costing us defensively.”

Pierce pitched for the Cavs and allowed just two earned runs and four hits. She picked up her 300th career strikeout in the game and Olivia is just a sophomore.

“I’m sad for this team and I am especially sad for our group of seniors that wanted this win so badly and to continue playing with one another,” said Cook. “However, I am also so thankful and blessed to have shared so many incredible memories with this group of young ladies this season. We had an extremely tough schedule and not once did they back down or give up. They showed grit, fight, passion, heart, and most importantly class. As a coach, that is all you could ask for from your team. I am immensely proud.”
