Botetourt County Public Schools has appointed Kara Halsey as the next principal of Read Mountain Middle School, effective July 1, according to an announcement made June 4 by the school division.
Halsey currently serves as principal of Eagle Rock Elementary School, where she has overseen initiatives focused on literacy, student achievement, staff development and school culture. During her tenure, Eagle Rock Elementary earned consecutive Virginia Department of Education Highest Achievement Awards for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years.
Superintendent Dr. Janet Womack praised Halsey’s leadership and commitment to students.
“Kara is an exceptional leader who has consistently demonstrated a commitment to student success, instructional excellence, and building strong relationships with students, staff, families, and the community,” Womack said in a statement. “Her leadership experience, passion for learning, and understanding of our school division make her an outstanding choice to lead Read Mountain Middle School.”
Halsey earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Hollins University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Radford University. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in education through Radford University.
Her connection to Read Mountain Middle School dates back to her teaching career. Before becoming principal at Eagle Rock Elementary, Halsey taught English at Read Mountain, served on the school’s leadership team and also taught at Salem High School.
In a statement, Halsey said she is eager to return to the school community.
“I am honored and excited to serve as the next principal of Read Mountain Middle School,” she said. “This school has always held a special place in my heart, and I look forward to partnering with our students, staff, families, and community as we continue to build on the school’s many strengths.”
Halsey succeeds the current administration as Read Mountain Middle School prepares for the 2026-27 academic year. School officials said her appointment reflects the division’s continued focus on strong leadership and student success across Botetourt County schools.
