This photograph shows Blue Ridge Hall during the late 19th century when horse drawn buggies were commonly used for transportation in Botetourt County. The two-story structure was built in 1839 at the intersection of a regional turnpike and the Great Road (now Route 11). Over the years it served as a stagecoach stop, the Blue Ridge Hotel, the Blue Ridge Post Office and the family home. It is now owned by Joe and Elizabeth Obenshain and is one of 14 properties recognized as a “Century Farm” in Botetourt.
The Virginia Century Farm Program recognizes family-owned farms that have sustained their land for the good of their communities and contributed to the economy of the Commonwealth for a hundred years or more. Places like this connect us to the past where memories and stories inspire us to create a stronger future. These historic farms remind us of the sacrifice early settlers made and the strength of their resilience.
