The James River volleyball team was scheduled to put its unbeaten record on the line Tuesday against Three Rivers District rival Glenvar. It was the first of two big matches for the Knights this week, as they host Class 5 Franklin County on Thursday in Springwood.
The Knights are off to a great start. Last Tuesday at home they knocked off a strong Radford team in three close sets, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-23. Ashby Wilkes had 18 kills, Kinley Millman had 11 and Ayden Jennings had 26 assists and nine digs.
“Radford was a big win for us,” said River coach Linsey Firebaugh. “They lost a lot from last year’s state championship team, but their coach always has them well prepared. We knew it would not be an easy game. The girls attacked aggressively and responsibly, not making many mistakes. They came into the game confident and ready to play and it showed.”
On Thursday in Martinsville River won another Three Rivers match, downing the host Bulldogs in three sets, 25-6, 25-9 and 25-8. Jennings had 15 assists and eight aces, Millman had 10 kills and Wilkes had eight kills and half a dozen aces.
River comes into the week at 6-0. Glenvar was 6-1 prior to Tuesday’s match with the only loss coming against Class 5 Patrick Henry.
