The Lord Botetourt football team is back in action this week after taking last Friday off with a bye.
“It was a good bye week,” said LB coach Nick Leftwich. “We got some people healthy and worked a lot on us.”
The Cavaliers come in at 2-3 on the season against non-district opponents. Friday’s game will be the first of five Blue Ridge District games in the second half of the regular season. Franklin County is winless after five games but that’s deceiving. They’ve played a schedule that includes undefeated Magna Vista, 4-1 Salem, Patrick Henry and Liberty Christian and 4-2 Bassett. The Eagles’ five opponents to date are a combined 21-5.
“Looking at their record would be a mistake,” said Leftwich. “Their schedule is probably among the top 10 toughest schedules in the state.
“Franklin County has a tough football team. They play incredibly hard and I have a lot of respect for coach (JR) Edwards. I wouldn’t be where I am without him, he’s someone I leaned on quite a bit over the years.”
It’s also Homecoming for Lord Botetourt. That can prove to be a distraction at some schools but Leftwich put it in perspective.
“We approach it like any other game,” he said. “They can have their fun as long as they realize Homecoming doesn’t exist without football. I stress that to our players.”
