The Lord Botetourt volleyball team played host to William Byrd last week in a game that was more important than a Blue Ridge District win. The two teams combined to raise $10,045 that was donated to the Life Ring Foundation.
The evening was dubbed “Spike Out Kids Cancer” and it was a special event for the two schools involved, who both lost fellow students to cancer in the past year. Dalton Close was taken by the disease from his loving friends at LB and the William Byrd student body suffered a similar fate when Cam Thepsimuong succumbed after a valiant battle. The money raised was donated in the name of Dalton and Cam.
Both teams wore special shirts for the game, and after a ceremony between the jayvee and varsity games, the Lord Botetourt girls came out on top in four sets, 25-20, 12-25, 25-16 and 25-17. Ava Stephens led the Cavs with 16 kills and five blocks. Skyla Corkins had nine kills and Adyson Greathouse had four blocks for LB.
On Saturday the Cavaliers played five best-of-three games in a big event at Cave Spring High School, winning three. Botetourt beat Hidden Valley, two sets to one, and Rustburg and Liberty Christian in two straight. They lost to host Cave Spring in two sets and Abingdon in three.
Tuesday of this week LB was scheduled to host Northside with a trip to Franklin County on Friday. Next Tuesday Staunton River is here for a Blue Ridge match.
