FINCASTLE – The Roanoke College lacrosse team recently visited Cloverdale Elementary School in Botetourt County to put on an exhibition for the students who accomplished their reading goals in the Accelerated Reader program.
The students in the Accelerated Reader program had an individual goal set for each six weeks period, where they had to read a set number of books and take a certain amount of tests in order to enjoy the day with the Maroon lacrosse team. The theme of the Accelerated Reader program this year was, “Let reading take you around the world.”
“We had something to do with a different continent each six weeks, and so we thought what better way to do it than with the oldest sport in North America?” explained Mrs. Boblett, the school librarian.
Prior to the exhibition, the students learned the history and some basics of lacrosse. RC lacrosse head coach Bill Pilat and the players went into a more depth analysis of the game, illustrating the different positions and sticks.
Pilat commented, “the Accelerated Reader program is a great way for us to give back to our community. Also, it’s a great way for us to spread the great word of lacrosse to the Roanoke Valley and to show kids that we really care about academics and reading.”
The Maroons return to home action at Kerr Stadium on Saturday, April 7, 2012, as they take on Randolph College in ODAC play. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
