In the interest of a deeper understanding of how government functions and to promote this understanding in future adults who will have the responsibility of preserving the special and unique process of “governing for the people and by the people,” the Botetourt County Democratic Party is offering a $500 scholarship to one graduating student from James River and Lord Botetourt High Schools in 2017.

Applications are available in the guidance office at each school.

Applicants are required to submit a 150-300 word essay describing how “Democracy Works in a Republic” with a one page cover page, including the following information:

• Name, address, phone number, parent’s names
• Current high school
• College plans
• A list of the five most important activities during high school
• A pledge that the material is original and prepared by the applicant and the willingness to allow submitted material to be published as part of the announcement of the winners
• Student’s signature with date

The purpose is to promote a better understanding of the country’s very special form of government.

The entries to not require GPA, “need” or party affiliation and will be judged only on the content of the essay

Donations are needed and appreciated to fund the scholarships and should be mailed to: Lois Switzer, Treasurer for Scholarship Fund, 5223 Old Fincastle Road, Fincastle, 24090.

Any excess funds will be saved for future scholarships or given to the schools, and will not be added to the party treasury.

An independent panel will judge the entries. Winners will be announced at the spring assemblies at the two schools and in The Fincastle Herald.

The deadline is March 1, 2017 (postmark). Applications not received by the deadline or do not include the required information will be not considered. They should be mailed to Peggy Davis, P.O. Box 33, Fincastle, 24090.
