The two Botetourt County schools will go head-to-head in boys basketball Saturday night when James River plays host to Lord Botetourt. The jayvee game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
The first time the two met, on December 16 in Daleville, Lord Botetourt broke open a close game with a big third quarter to defeat James River, 52-38. The Cavaliers come into the week at 4-8 while James River is 3-7.
Botetourt will play host to William Byrd in a Blue Ridge tilt tonight. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but moved back a day due to the inclement weather. LB also has a district game in Moneta on Friday night against Staunton River.
The Cavaliers last suited up on Friday of last week in Roanoke, falling to William Fleming, 63-39.
“They really hurt us in transition,” said LB coach Chad Conner. “We turned the ball over a lot and we didn’t do a good job of getting back. I thought we did a good job of defending their sets, but they really hurt us in transition.”
LB led 12-10 after the first quarter but that was the only quarter the Cavaliers won, as Fleming went up 30-18 by the half, then increased the lead to 18 by the end of the third quarter. Kris Call led the Cavs with 11 points and Dylan Maclachan had eight.
James River has not played for over a week. The Knights were weathered out of a home game against Glenvar last Thursday and a road game at Radford on Monday. The Knights are scheduled to host Floyd County this Thursday night.
River’s last game was a 69-57 loss to Giles in Pearisburg on January 3. Darious Cheatwood had 30 points for the Knights in the loss.
Next week, River will host Staunton River on Monday and Auburn on Tuesday.
