James River High School will be the site of the Conference 38 boys basketball semifinals tonight, and both games are big. The two winners will earn a spot in the Region 2A West basketball tournament next week.
The first game will match Giles against defending Group 2A state champion Martinsville at 5:30 p.m. Giles beat Floyd County, 65-56, in the four-five game Monday night in Pearisburg.
Tonight’s second game will match third seeded James River against second seeded Glenvar at 7:15 p.m. Glenvar has won both regular season meetings, but the Knights came on strong in the second half of the season and will have the advantage of playing at home.
“Mike Goad is a good coach, and I’m sure he’ll have something cooked up for us,” said Glenvar coach David Redding of his River counterpart. “We’ll have to be ready for anything. It’s going to be a tough game.”
The two winners will play for the Conference 38 championship on Friday at 7:15 p.m. It will follow a 5:30 p.m. girls championship, also at James River. The girls semifinals are Thursday night with Glenvar against Martinsville at 5:30 p.m. and Floyd against Giles at 7:15 pm.
