The Lord Botetourt girls are the second seed in the Conference 31 basketball tournament, which is being hosted this week by Northside High School.
The Cavaliers come in at 19-3 for the season but they’re seeded behind Magna Vista, who is 16-1. Semifinal games were held at Northside on Tuesday, but results were too late for publication. Magna Vista was scheduled to play Alleghany in the opener, followed by LB against host Northside.
The championship game is Friday at Northside, beginning at 6 p.m., and it’s the first game of a doubleheader with the boys championship game. The finalists all advance to the Region 3A West tournaments next week, with the conference champs getting the better seeds.
Botetourt finished up the regular season with a couple wins last week. On “Senior Night” in Daleville the Cavaliers beat William Byrd, 54-37. Senior Maggie Quarles had 15 points, as did sophomore Jenna Alam. Hannah Bane, another senior, had five assists.
“We have seven seniors this year, the most I’ve ever had,” said LB coach Chuck Pound, who also has a talented group of underclassmen.
On Friday at Staunton River the girls polished off the regular season with a 63-27 win. Everyone on the team played, and Brooklyn Shelton led the scoring with 19 points in just 15 minutes of playing time in the first half. Miette Veldman had 10 points and nine rebounds while Mary-Hannah Jackson had eight points. Sara Bane had five assists.
