James River High School will be the site of the Region 2A West basketball tournaments for both boys and girls this week.
Opening rounds for the tournaments were held at the sites of the higher seeded teams. On Thursday, the boys region semifinals will be at River at 6 and 7:45 p.m. Teams in the tournament include Martinsville, Glenvar, Dan River, Graham, Gate City, Chatham, Union High and Richlands. Quarterfinals were Tuesday at the higher seeds.
On Friday, the girls take over with semifinals at 6 and 7:45 p.m. Girls teams in the quarterfinals are Martinsville, Gretna, Grundy, Central-Wise, Chatham, Floyd County, Ridgeview and Marion. Girls quarterfinals will be at the higher seeds tonight.
The Region 2A West championship and third place games will be on Saturday, beginning with the girls third place game at noon. The girls region championship is at 2 p.m., followed by the boys third place game at 4 p.m. and the boys regional championship at 6 p.m.
The James River boys were eliminated one win shy of making the regional tournament. The Knights lost to Glenvar in the Conference 38 semifinals last week, 65-51, in a game in Springwood. Darious Cheatwood led River with 19 points, Jacob Wagner had 11 and River Clonch had 10.
That ended River’s season with a 9-12 overall record. Glenvar advanced to Friday’s championship game at River, where the Highlanders upset Martinsville to win the Conference 38 championship.
