The Lord Botetourt girls were at Broadway High School Tuesday night for a Region 3A West quarterfinal game. Results were too late for publication, but the winner of that game advanced to the regional semifinals and clinched a spot in the state tournament next week.
Eight teams were playing for four state berths Tuesday. In addition to the LB game, Western Albemarle was at Hidden Valley, Abingdon was at Brookville and Spotswood was at Magna Vista.
Regional semifinals are scheduled for Brookville High School in Lynchburg on Thursday. If LB won Tuesday the Cavaliers would meet the winner of the Hidden Valley-Western Albemarle game at 7:45 p.m. The other game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The championship round is Friday at Brookville, with a third place game preceding the championship. All four teams make the state tournament, with this Saturday’s games determining seeding.
Lord Botetourt came into the regional tournament with a 20-4 record after finishing second in the Conference 31 tournament last week. The Cavaliers clinched a regional berth with a 77-46 win over host Northside on February 15. Botetourt jumped all over the Vikings, taking a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and coasting to the win. Maggie Quarles and Miette Veldman had 16 points each to lead LB and Veldman also had 12 rebounds and five assists. Jenna Alam had 15 points, Brooklyn Shelton had 13 and Hannah Bane had nine assists.
On Friday the Cavs took on top-seeded Magna Vista and dropped a 46-40 game that was tight from start to finish. Neither team led by more than six points and LB had plenty of chances down the stretch.
“It was a great game for spectators,” said LB coach Chuck Pound. “We had our opportunities.”
Veldman had 11 points and six boards to lead LB while Alam had 10 points.
The result gave Magna Vista a home game on Tuesday while LB had to go to Broadway. The Cavaliers lost to Broadway by six points in the Cave Spring Christmas tournament in a very close game.
