Central Academy Middle School held the second annual YOVASO Safety Day. YOVASO stands for Youth Of Virginia Speak Out about traffic and pedestrian safety. This day is held in conjunction with the “Arrive Alive” campaign. Arrive Alive is a peer-to-peer traffic safety campaign for Virginia high and middle schools. The middle school campaign focuses on driver, passenger, pedestrian and bicycle safety during the high-risk spring and summer months between April and August. For YOVASO Day at CAMS, students focused on what a crash looks and sounds like through both classroom presentation and hands-on activities. Students participated in an obstacle course and shot basketballs while wearing DUI goggles, which simulate what it is like to be under the influence of alcohol. The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit also put on a demonstration for students. Above, YOSAVO members include (from left): front, Alyssa Grimes, Bailey Mines, Taylor Grimes, Hayley Vanover and Ainsley Simmons; Back, Isabella Erber, Faith Brandt, Rachel Harless, Reagan Hester, Reagan Harris, Hannah Falls, Myla Lester and Hunter Barrett, with School Resource Officer Sgt. Scott Gathje. Below, CAMS eighth grade students used QR codes to watch a live crime scene unfold.
