The culmination of a highly successful capital campaign at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College was observed April 27 with the unveiling of a Donor Wall on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus.
The campaign, the first of its kind in almost 20 years, raised more than $4 million, according to DSLCC Educational Foundation Director Rachael Thompson. Almost 400 donors are listed on the wall, located in Backels Hall.
“With your avid support,” Thompson told attendees, “we have been able to award more than 1,100 student scholarships, worth nearly $1.7 million throughout the course of our history, to students right here in our region – making educational attainment a reality, building our regional workforce, and, ultimately, helping advance the local economy. In 2016 alone, we were proud to award more than $225,000 in scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year, with more than one-third of those students on the President’s and Vice President’s honor lists for academic success after the close of the fall semester. Clearly, our financial support in the form of scholarship dollars translates to academic success.”
In addition, said Thompson, the DSLCC Educational Foundation was able to purchase scholarship software to provide an online scholarship application, evaluation, and awarding process, making it easier on and more accessible to applicants
Finally, said Thompson, the Foundation was able to assist the College with more than $415,000 in funding for faculty and student grants, student support services, and college programs and equipment in 2016.
Also recognized were the 16 “named spaces” around campus; plaques are located outside various classrooms and offices in appreciation of major gifts.
Five of the plaques are located in Scott Hall: including in the Student Café, by John Alderson, Del. Terry Austin, H. Watts Steger III, and John B. Williamson III, and Classroom 385, by the Botetourt Education Foundation.
Warren Hall plaques include: Classroom 404, Bank of Botetourt; and the Conference Room, Proffitt-Vaughn Family.
