The Lord Botetourt golfers were on the verge of winning the Blue Ridge District season championship with one match to go. The Cavaliers had a healthy lead heading into Tuesday’s district finale at Blue Hills.
Botetourt won the fourth leg of the BRD tour last Thursday at the Westlake course with a score of 331. LB won all four of the rounds to that point and had an overall lead of 38 strokes heading into Tuesday’s match at Blue Hills.
Brett Pennington led the Cavaliers at Westlake with a 76, tying Gavin Linden of Northside for medalist honors. Joe Crump shot an 80, Kaitlyn Mosdell had 85 and Kyle Lograsso and Tucker Grimshaw both carded 90 to round out the scoring.
With one round to go Pennington trailed Bryce Corkery of William Byrd by six points for individual honors. Brett picked up six and a half points on Corkery in the BRD point system at Westlake last week, as the Byrd number one came in at 77. The race for individual district champ is a two-horse race, as Northside’s Nick Underwood is well behind Corkery and Pennington in third place.
Botetourt also holds the seventh, eighth and ninth spots in the individual standings. Crump is seventh, followed by Lograsso and Mosdell. Grimshaw is 11th.
The Cavaliers will be off until after Labor Day following Tuesday’s round at Blue Hills.
