The James River volleyball team had a busy weekend as the Knights participated in the Richmond Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
“We played great,” said River coach Dave McGee. “It was a good experience.”
River finished ninth out of 18 teams in its division, mostly schools much larger than James River. River had matches against Patrick Henry of Ashland, Cosby, Massaponax, South Lake and Granby. Each match went three sets regardless of the scores and River won nine of the 15 sets played.
“It was a lot of fun and we worked well together as a team,” said River’s Lilli Clevenger.
For the weekend Linsey Bailey had 71 combined kills while Bailey Marshall had 49 and Michaela Tolley had 30. Anna Schroeder had 34 digs.
“It was like everything clicked and it was like dynamite,” said Marshall. “We had fun watching the boys games, too. It’s nice knowing that guys over 6’2” exist.”
The Knights opened the regular season with a win at Parry McCluer last week, 25-6, 25-16 and 25-12. Linsey Bailey led River with 11 kills, Marshall had seven and Tolley had six. Makayla Saville had 28 assists and seven digs for the Knights.
River was scheduled to play at Nelson County on Tuesday of this week, they host Parry McCluer on Thursday and next Tuesday, Sept. 12, Lord Botetourt is in Springwood for an intra-county match.
